In 2012, representatives of the EU member states achieved a breakthrough agreement: The European unitary patent will soon provide for patent protection for inventions in 25 countries across Europe. Meanwhile, the agreement to install a European patent court is currently also being ratified by EU member states. In this article approaching one year since my country Denmark held a national referendum on this issue, I will attempt to review how far Europe has come in the implementation of the European patent package and review some of the content that this package will be offering.
