It is widely recognized that knowledge plays an increasingly important role in modern economies, and intangible assets often constitute a significant portion of the value of technology companies.

Intangible assets include intellectual capital and intellectual property. Understanding the value of a patent portfolio is a complex task, which requires knowledge from three different disciplines: patent law, technology and finance. Inadequate valuation of patents may lead to sub-optimal and potentially very costly decisions.
